Fertilize Post-Aeration

Lawn Watering, Fertilizing, and Aerating for Early Growth in North America

To achieve a lush, green lawn in North America, follow these watering, fertilizing, and aerating practices tailored for early spring growth, highlighting soil aeration for lawn health.

Follow on Youtube GREEN SCOTT to SEE my results and fast low cost progress.

Watering: Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Apply 1 inch of water every 5-7 days, ideally in the early morning to minimize evaporation and fungal issues. For cool-season grasses (e.g., fescue, bluegrass) in northern regions, start as soil thaws in early spring. In southern areas with warm-season grasses (e.g., Bermuda, Zoysia), begin in late spring. Check soil moisture by inserting a screwdriver; if it penetrates easily, soil is adequately moist. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to shallow roots and disease.

Preseason Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release nitrogen-rich fertilizer (e.g., N-P-K ratio of 4-1-2) in early spring for cool-season grasses or late spring for warm-season varieties. Use a broadcast spreader for even application, following package instructions to avoid lawn burn. Fertilize after mowing and raking to ensure nutrients reach the soil. A soil test can pinpoint nutrient needs, but most lawns benefit from 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet to kickstart growth.

Aerating for Soil Health: Aeration relieves soil compaction, enhancing water and nutrient uptake. Use a core aerator like the GreenScott.ca aerator, a Canadian-made tool that attaches to mowers, pulling 2.5-inch soil plugs for optimal root access. Aerate in early spring (cool-season) or late spring (warm-season) when grass is actively growing and soil is moist. Mow low (1.5-2 inches), water 1-2 days prior, and make multiple passes over compacted areas. Leave plugs to decompose, enriching soil.
